Configuration Basics

This application uses concept of Policies as a fundamental building block of configuration. Policies represent logical conditions which can be used to restrict access to applications, assign bonuses, send notifications, etc… To create or edit policies please open main menu and select “Policies”. Here you will find an options to create either Restrictive, Bonus or Notification policies.

Policy Assignment

Policies that impose restrictions on application usage and bonus calculation must be assigned to respective Apps or Groups.

To assign policy please navigate to Applications section via Main Menu, locate necessary name and touch-hold until you’ll see the popup menu. Please follow the menu options and select appropriate policy for an application.

Policy Wizard

To simplify policy configuration the Advanced Parental Tools application provides specialized wizard to build policies for common life situations. It is recommended for start building policies using wizard before moving on to more advanced policy editor. To open wizard please navigate to Policies screen via Main Menu and click on right-most icon on the application toolbar.

Policy Types

All policies are divided into three main categories/types: Restrictions, Bonus and Notifications. The policies created via Policy Wizard will be placed automatically into appropriate category. However for advanced Policy configuration mode you’ll need to choose the type upon creation of new policy. Below is the description of each type:

Restriction

This type of Policy defines conditions under which the application should be blocked.

The built-in policy named Unconditional can be used to lock access to any application unconditionally. To make an assignment, just touch the app name in the Applications screen.
A more complex policy allows you to block the application in accordance with very elaborate conditions. To create a new policy, go to the “Policies” window (via the main menu of the application) and click the Add (plus) sign in the upper-right corner of the screen. From the suggested options, select “Restriction Policy”.  After that, in the presented screen, you need to provide a name and add conditions.
After you finish editing the policy, click the Save button (the second one on the right in the upper right corner). After saving, you can assign the policy to an application or group. To do this, go to the App screen, touch the app name, and wait until a pop-up window with options appear.

Bonus Time

Allows you to grant additional time in accordance with the specified conditions. This type of policy can be described as “time piggy bank” that can be used in combination with the time limit conditions applied to the Restriction Policy. All actions over time, including bonus accumulation (if dynamically), are calculated according to the total time of use of the applications to which this policy is added. Adding a policy to the application is done in the same way as for the restriction policy.

Notifications

This kind of policy is similar to Restriction type however instead of blocking action the policy sends notification via PUSH message to parent’s device or email.

Policy Conditions

Most Policies are configured by adding various conditions that determine the situations when the policy is triggered. Conditions are added in the Policy editor window. If several conditions are added, then you need to pay attention to how the conditions interact with each other and change the value “Apply when:” accordingly.

Conditions:

Usage
monitors the usage time of applications or groups to which the corresponding policy is assigned. If the policy is assigned to the application, then only the time of the corresponding application is taken into account. When a policy is assigned to a group the total of all applications time in the group is taken into account
Time Of Day
triggered according to the set time of day
GPS Location

condition to be triggered according to current location of the device

Network Connection

condition that triggers policy state according to current WiFi network connection

Physical Activity

triggers policy according to fitness activity statistics. Requires integration with Google Fit. To enable integration please open the policy with this condition directly on child’s device and click on provided integration warning

Policy Examples:

Limit access to one hour a day

After adding such a policy to an application or group, the access time will be limited to one hour per day for specified application or group.

Policy

Bonus Policy

This dynamic bonus accumulates time up to one hour per day in accordance with the total time of use of the applications to which this bonus is assigned. The added condition guarantees that the bonus will be issued only after the full hour.
To start accumulating time the policy should be assigned to applications that you want your child to encourage to use.
The accumulated time can be used by the Usage condition of the Restriction policy.

Policy

Limit access to one hour with bonus

This an enhancement and combination of first two examples that provides Restriction policy for one hour usage with bonus time capability.

Policy

Policy with multiple conditions

Restrict access to Application or Group up to one hour a day as well as after 10PM
